A recent warm spell has left city sidewalks and roads slick. On today's To Your Health, Catherine Hansen has more on how to keep yourself on your feet during the slippery winter months.
And now, "To Your Health". Brought to you by Hart Drugs, Third Avenue Pharmacy and the Phoenix Pharmacy.
(Catherine Hansen - Reporter:)
With icy roads and sidewalks, it can be difficult to stay upright through the winter months. Sometimes a little preparation can go a long way.
(Gloria Fox - Northern Health:)
"Proper footwear for the winter is very important when you're out and about, and also investing in a pair of ice grippers. Something that's easy to get on and off so that you're more likely to use them on a regular basis."
Proper footwear may seem costly, but the investment can pay off. Good boots can last between two to four seasons. There are many products on the market that can help you stay on your feet and navigate icy surfaces.
(Matt Walsh - Timberline Footfitters:)
"It's hard to have good support with a lower quality pair of shoes. It begins with the structure, a good solid heel counter. Proper fit is the main thing. Shoes these days will have extra added traction."
Getting your body ready for winter is also a good option, as regular exercise can help prevent slips and falls, and injuries related to them.
"Physical activity is very important. Of course with physical activity, you increase your balance, you increase your strength and mobility. Those things add up to decreasing your risk of falls and decreasing your risk of injury with falls. So keeping active is vitally important. The benefits of getting outside and getting active far outweigh the risks generally."
Sand and salt on icy surfaces will help. Fox recommends keeping it on hand at home and recommends local businesses do the same, in the hopes of keeping everyone on their feet and injury free. To your health, Catherine Hansen, CKPG News.
